An At-Home Body Wrap You Can Make Right Now

3.4 / 5 ( 22 votes )

DIY Body Wrap

Your average women’s magazine is full of articles about famous celebrity women who have had a baby and immediately lost all of that excess weight. There is also no shortage of stories about celebrities who have completely changed the shape and size of their body in a very short period of time, in spite of the fact that they claim that they made no changes to their diet or exercise regimen.

In many instances, a body wrap is directly responsible for these changes in weight and shape and may be able to help you lose inches while also speeding up your metabolism. But you don’t have to spend lots of cash to experience the benefits of this trendy spa treatment.

What Is A Body Wrap?

A body wrap is a way to promote excessive sweating in a particular area of the body, which can result in not only significant loss in weight, but the reduction in toxins throughout the body. In many ways, the results that you will get from a body wrap is much like what you would experience from spending time in a sauna or steam room. The only differences that a body wrap provides more substantial changes in size and weight over a shorter period of time.

Depending on the kind of body wrap that you choose, and whether or not you opt for an at-home body wrap or one that is done in a spa, they usually consist of some type of skin exfoliation or micro dermabrasion, followed by application of oil, followed by wrapping the body with plastic or some other type of material.

Do Body Wraps Really Help You Lose Weight?

It is important to note that a single at-home body wrap will not in itself cause you to change your body fat percentage or give you a healthier body. But, it may result in short-term water weight loss that can help you fit into your favorite jeans or a new dress. It’s also nourishing for the skin, and many people report seeing a healthy glow after they try it.

The amount of weight that you can lose will depend on the methods that you choose, how much excess water your body is storing right now, and the amount of time that you are able to tolerate the heat.

Body wraps should never be used by women who are pregnant, breast-feeding, those who are taking medications that make them susceptible to heat, or anyone who is suffering from existing health conditions. Body wraps can be uncomfortable for some people, though the results can often be worth it.

How to Create an At-Home Body Wrap

Most commonly, people will have spa body wraps the first time, as a way to see if this is a method of weight loss that works for them. One problem with having a body wrap done in a spa is that it can be embarrassing to have in other person wrapping your body and plastic or applying exfoliating and moisturizing products. If you’re not bothered by such up-close and personal attention from a stranger, then no worries!

The other downside to a spa body wrap is that it can be very expensive. Keeping in mind that the results are primarily short-term, spending hundred dollars or more on this type of treatment might not be something that you are willing to put into your family budget.

On the bright side, it is possible to create your own at home body wrap as long as you do it sensibly. Here’s how to try it for yourself:

  1. Exfoliate. Create your own body scrub out of natural food products that you may have in your home right now. Here’s our favorite (and cheapest) recipe:
    – 1 part oil (we like coconut oil the best, but you could also use canola or olive oil
    – 2 parts sugar (make sure the granules are fine; large ones can tear your skin)
    – 2 drops of an essential oil for fragrance (optional – we like tea tree oil)Using a loofah exfoliation sponge (or just your hands), rub a generous amount of the scrub all over your body, using a circular motion. You can spend more time on rough areas such as elbows and heels.
  2. Rinse thoroughly to cleanse the skin. You won’t need a moisturizer after using this scrub.
  3. Wrap yourself in plastic wrap. The easiest way to do this is to use a handy plastic wrap dispenser like the ones that furniture movers use. This will allow you to wrap the plastic fairly tightly on your limbs and torso. Just don’t wrap TOO tightly!   You will look like an insane person once you’re done, but it’s also kind of fun, we promise.
  4. Cover yourself with a warm blanket or heating pad. Stay wrapped up and warm and cozy for about half an hour. This will help make the treatment more effective.

Another Option For Heat-Sensitive People

If you don’t want to put together your own wrap kit, or if you don’t have a heating pad or don’t feel like sweating but still want the detox effects of a good wrap, I recommend this detox clay-based kit from Amazon.com:

How Much Money Can You Save?

Most women already have everything they need at home in order to create an at-home body wrap. If this is something that you enjoy doing on a regular basis or you are doing this is a way to reduce toxins in your body, then choosing an at-home body wrap treatment is certainly more sensible in terms of cost.

Since the average spa treatment can run upwards of $300, the savings can be considerable and will enable you to do this on a more regular basis. Our home-made recipe above, including the scrub ingredients, the plastic wrap, and a brand-new heating pad cost us a total of $22.50. Of course, if you already have one at home, or opt to use a blanket you already own, your total cost is more like a very minimal $2.50. Super great bargain!

Is an At-Home Body Wrap Right for You?

There are obviously warnings with any kind of at home treatment, and so an at-home body wrap should only be used by someone who is otherwise healthy. It is also important to take the time to properly hydrated after doing this type of treatment. By consuming more water both before and after your at-home body wrap, you will better be able to flush toxins and excess debris from your body.

Make a rice bag heating pad. Regular rice(not instant) in, I like to sew a dish towel together like a sack. Fill with rice. Put in the microwave for 3 minutes. Heat lasts a long time. Inexpensive and easy.

if you take some hand towels get them wet and wring them out to get the excess water out. heat them up in the microwave till theyre warm put them on the area of focus and then take a dry towel and cover the warm wet one up to keep it warm longer.

I’ve tried on of the body wraps from a spa kit. The thing is, we only used a small amount of plastic wrap to hold it in place. It was an herbal patch. I didn’t sweat much at all, and drank a lot of water during the procedure so that any inches loss wouldn’t be water weight. I’m curious what blend of herbs they used on the wrap.

In my experience, once or twice a week has given me great results. Really, you could do this as many times as you want, but it may cause skin irritation depending on your skin type and if you are sensitive to any of the ingredients or materials involved. You might want to try it once then gradually increase the number of times per week.

I tried the it work wraps and had to drink 1/2 body weight in water for three days. I did 4 wraps and saw no results. Curious why these don’t work on me. I am a small apple size and used to be hour glass and would like to be back. 🙁

Hi Tammy – I know what you mean about being hourglass at one point in your life and wanting it back! I’m more of a pear shape, and definitely need to tone up my problem areas. I have had some luck seeing small improvements on my stomach and thighs with these wraps, but nothing very significant. I get the best results when I combine diet and exercise with spa treatments like these. One thing I’ve noticed is that I look a lot less bloated and more slim when I cut dairy and alcohol from my diet. Maybe try that for a good month, if you consume those things?

    Reply
    • Zoe says

      September 2, 2014 at 1:11 PM

      Hi Dana,
The “parts” refers to a generic measurement for a ratio of ingredients. This is used so that anyone can mix up as much or a little as they wish. For example, if you used your base measurement as a tablespoon, then “1 part” would be 1 tablespoon and “2 parts” would be 2 tablespoons. Since the recipe is for a scrub for the entire body, I use a cup as the base measurement, so my recipe is 1 cup/part oil, 2 cup/parts sugar, and a couple of drops of fragrant oil. You can also adjust the ratios to suit your personal needs.
      Hope that helps.

Hi Brooke – thanks for your question! I wouldn’t recommend wearing your wrap while you work out. Your body needs to be able to perspire and your sweat needs to evaporate so you don’t overheat. But I can’t think of a much better treat for *after* your workout than pampering yourself with a wrap!

Not a good idea to reuse the scrub! Bacteria from your skin are incorporated once used. Not very sanitary. Coconut oil you can get for an average price of $8-10. Sugar is roughly $1-2. The essential oils are not necessary, just used for aromatherapy. But they vary in cost but roughly $5-10. You can just make a large batch of it instead of attempting to reuse it.

I don’t think that would be very sanitary. There is a lot of bacteria that lives on the surface of the skin. That might cause your scrub to go bad and have very bad smells. I would not recommend it.

Ever since then I have not had the luxury to buy body wraps because of my extra expenses (due to supporting a child and being out on your own) but I like the idea of this. For the oil, I love using coconut oil, but you could do canola or olive oil if you already have those on hand.

Hi Lisa – You can rinse off or even wash off again if you don’t like that “super-moisturized” feeling. But what I like to do every once in a while is get an old towel that I don’t mind messing up, and just lightly wipe off any residual oil from the exfoliation part of the process (if there’s any still on my skin), rather than get back in the tub or shower. It keeps my skin feeling really soft and supple for days!

Hi Zahra – the wrap can help deeply moisturize your skin, and wrapping it tightly can encourage firming, but results really depend on how much loose skin you have. The wrap should help with the health and condition of your skin, but it can only do so much firming over time. Still, it’s kind of fun and worth giving a try. Good luck!

Hi Zoe, this might sound like a stupid question but I’ve had 3 c-sections so I have what seems to look like extra saggy skin around my scar or its possible that it’s just scar tissue, so I’m wondering do you know if this will still work when the extra fat is surrounded by scar tissue

Hi there, not a stupid question at all! I can’t say for sure whether the scar tissue will affect the results, but it’s definitely worth trying out and seeing how it works for you. At the very least, you should see softer, firmer skin in your tummy area. I’d love to hear how it goes, good luck!

Hi there. I’m pretty tight and don’t want to pay alot for the wraps. But I was told that using a household wrap (like food cling wrap), was bad as the toxins from the wrap are going into your body?

    Reply
    • Zoe says

      February 20, 2015 at 7:56 AM

Hi Leah – great question. The research I’ve done has proven to be a little conflicting, but the most reputable sources say the danger from toxins is something to worry about only when using cling wrap to microwave food you’re actually going to consume. And even then, testing has proven that BPAs and other toxins in several major cling wrap brands don’t even transfer to food in an traceable way. So the good news is, it seems like there’s little reason to worry about using cling wrap on your skin.

Here’s a link to a Good Housekeeping article in which they tested several brands of wrap and their findings: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/product-reviews/consumer-protection/plastic-safety-heat-food-6
      Hope this helps!

Ok, I’m confused. After reading the article and the comments, I’m a little lost on the process.

Do we scrub while dry and leave the scrub on for awhile and then get in the shower to rinse/wipe it off or do we do the scrub while in the shower and just scrub for a few minutes?

After using the scrub, we wrap a clean dry section of the body, right?

Leave the wrap on for 30 minutes and be warm. What if you don’t have a heating pad?

After the 30 min wrap, what do you do? I read one comment to just wipe off and another one saying to shower if you’re Reay sweaty.

    Please clarify! Thanks 🙂

Hi Tabitha – I think maybe I confused things in the comments, so sorry about that! But really you could do it a couple of different ways with the same good results. To address your questions specifically, I like to scrub while in the shower, rinse off the scrub in the shower, then get out and gently pat dry so my skin is still damp. Next, apply the wrap and heat (if you don’t have a heating pad, you can just snuggle up under a warm blanket). After 30 minutes, remove the wrap and rinse off in the shower again if you like — you don’t have to, but I always feel kinda sweaty after I finish a wrap, so I like to hop back in for a few minutes. 🙂

I tried a similar version of this a few nights ago. It involved vapor rub, and was very slimy.
    I have a couple of questions;
    1. I have terrible terrible love handles/muffin tops, and I’ve been slowly loosing weight everywhere else, but these will just not go away! Do you think a lower wrap would help?
    2. I have a home made coffee sugar body scrub, would that be okay to use befor hand?
    3. How much wrap do you use to actually wrap yourself? The pics I’ve seen online vary from a dainty 2-3 see through layers to a hardcore mummification.

Using the coffee sugar scrub should be just fine to use before you wrap. And I usually just wrap myself with about 3 layers max. I’m not sure wrapping with any more layers would be more effective, but maybe I’m wrong. All I know is you just cracked me up with “hardcore mummification” 😀

I’ve found that I have wonderful results with these when I use them regularly and drink a detox water. My favorite detox water is 1 part 100 percent unsweetened cranberry juice and 7 parts water. Unsweetened cranberry juice is disgusting, but mixed with water and over ice it is amazing! It releases toxins from your body and it’s also a fat fighter! And for those of you ladies that struggle with urinary tract infections it does WONDERS to prevent them! Wins all around! I also sleep in my wraps now that my body is used to it. I couldn’t at first, but I do this every other night before I go to bed. I only ever wrap my thighs and tummy so it may be harder to sleep in them if you’re wrapping your back or calves or arms.

Hi Samantha – You could certainly try that — kind of like being in a sauna, I imagine! Just be careful and don’t let yourself get overheated.

Hey! I was wondering if I could put lotion/moisturizer on then put the wrap on? And also is it ok for someone in their early teens to use?… I’m 15. Thanks so much for writing this! Stay beautiful!!!!

Hey Alex – you sure can! If you want to skip the exfoliation step, you could just put on lotion and then wrap. But remember not to keep it on too long. Half an hour is ideal, and I don’t recommend more than an hour. Good luck!

Hi, was wondering if I could use my own exfoliate sea salt scrub I got from SASA (for burning of fats) first, then wash off, apply on my moisturizer/aloe vera before putting on the wrap?

Thereafter, after taking off the wrap and washing, can we put on any moisturizer or we should just leave it as it is?

Thanks for sharing this article which answered lots of my queries. Stay beautiful!! 🙂

Hi Sheryl – thanks for your questions! Sure, I encourage you to use your own exfoliation scrub – it sounds great. And yes, you can certainly apply moisturizer before you wrap – a lot of folks have written in to tell me they did that too and had good results. I’m going to try it myself next time. 🙂

Hi ladies, just did wrapping on my legs, stomach and buttock yesterday. Made paste of white clay, fine grounded coffee, sea salt and see weeds. First poured boiling water over sea salt to dissolve, added sea weeds and then rest of ingredience . In the end added 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Before applying past on my problem parts of the body made a scrab of ground coffee and olive oil, polished skeen, washed away and pat almost dry. Then applied body wrapp mixture on my skin, wrap with cotton sheets, secure with cling plastic wrap and put warm pants on. Stayed for about an hour covered with warm blanket, then took a shower and massage anti-cellulite oil that prepared myself ( 1/3 cup of base oil +10 drops of juniper or Rosemary oil + 2 drops of lemon essential oil) into problem parts. Massage for about 5-10 min.
Result I could see right away. Cellulite bumps less noticeable, skeen is smooth, soft and tight.
Wraps should be done regularly at least twice per week for 10-14 sessions to see result. Also exercise and right eating is a must if we are really determin to make a changes. On some website it was saying that we should use different recipes for wrapping for the best result. So good luck and wish all ladies to be satisfied with result ! Stay healthy and happy!

Hi Flor – I don’t recommend it, since I think it would be uncomfortable and restrict your movement.

Hi Cynthia – you can do it either way, but I have lately been leaving the mixture on and then wrapping. The only challenge is that it gets pretty messy. 🙂

Hi Seval, I don’t recommend leaving the wrap on overnight, as it would be uncomfortable and probably cause your skin to prune.

Hello I was wondering how many wraps will I use before I see progress and how long can you keep it on and is it breastfeeding safe

Hi Shelbie – I usually notice some skin tightening after 2 or 3 wraps. For your breastfeeding question, please check with your doctor to make sure it’s OK to wrap while breastfeeding.

Hi Jocelyn, you could try the wrap without it. You don’t technically have to do the scrub, I just find that it makes my skin so soft it’s worth it!
