Can You Get Rid of Acne Scars? Here’s How

It’s pretty rare to find anyone who makes it into adulthood without any scars at all. Chances are that you had a case of chickenpox as a child, that you suffered some inconsequential injuries or accidents, or that you had some kind of surgery. Acne scars are also some of the most common types of scars that people are looking for ways to get rid of, since they are still visibly apparent to others. Learning how to get rid of acne scars is something that can really change the way that you feel about your skin and the way that others view you as well.

Are Acne Scars Permanent?

One mistake that many people make is that they believe that acne scars are always going to be permanent. The truth is that there may be little that can be done for extremely severe and deep acne scars, but for the majority of cases, there are some ways to reduce the signs of the scars and actually create healthier, younger looking skin.

One thing that will make acne scars far more permanent is constant exposure to the sun. The sun’s UV rays accentuate the visibility of scars, leading to far more permanent skin imperfections. But, by using certain techniques and protecting your skin from the sun and other environmental factors, you can get rid of acne scars in most cases.

What Can You Do About Severe Acne Scars?

Traditionally, natural methods for reducing acne scars have been used, though the effectiveness of these methods are not necessarily proven. Some methods include exfoliation, which removes the outer layers of skin cells. Exfoliation or microdermabrasion can be helpful in some cases, but it can also leave the skin extremely red, irritated, and inflamed.

Severe acne scars can be reduced through the use of acidic ingredients such as lemon juice. Again, this kind of process can be very irritating for people who have naturally sensitive skin, not to mention that it can take a very long time in order to see results.

Is It Possible To Fade Acne Scars On All Skin Types?

The human body is very interesting in that people with fair colored skin can get both dark and light colored scars, and darker skinned people can also get dark or light colored scars. In other words, bleaching efforts may not be effective for people of any skin tone, particularly if they have no significant discoloration in their scar.

Darker colored scars are generally considered to be easier to get rid of, primarily because the method of reducing the visibility of these scars has to do with the reduction of pigment in the area which can be done in a number of different ways.

Do Home Remedies Really Work?

Due to the outrageous acne scar removal cost that many dermatologists and skin clinics are charging for various treatments, many people are turning to home remedies and natural products. Some of these can provide even better results with fewer side effects than clinical procedures, and of course there is none of the embarrassment that you would have to deal with if you were seeing a professional for acne scar reduction.

The best way to get results with your acne scars at home is to incorporate the following into your skin care routine:

  • Take a vitamin E supplement
  • Wear sunscreen with at least 30 SPF every day
  • Use a powerful yet natural scar cream that’s formulated specifically for skin imperfections left by acne
  • Boost collagen turnover, encourage elastin production, and improve the results of your scar cream with micro-needling

One thing that is important to note with any skin treatment of this kind is that it is important to gauge the sensitivity of your skin before using it on a large or visible area. In other words, before using a scar reduction cream on your entire face, try it out on a sensitive area of your body, such as the inside of your forearm to ensure that it does not cause extensive redness or irritation.

Be warned, DermalMD Acne Serum is kind of stinky. That being said, I’ve been using it after washing/toning and prior to any serums/moisturizers. I’ve recently healed a lot of cystic acne on my jawline and there’s quite a bit of scars remaining. This seems to be a preventative measure keeping the acne from reappearing as well as healing the scars that were leftover. The bottle is small, but a little of the product goes a very long way.
